This strand of 89 hand-carved jadeite jade beads is quite rare because these jade beads are imperfect: look at that one: a soft mint-green with the tiniest patch of oxidized iron; or this one here with a natural fissure that's ever so slightly wheat-colored. You see, these are exactly the sort of beads that would today be soaked in hydrochloric acid to remove their coloring "imperfections" and then impregnated with a polymer to fill the void created in the stone burned away by the acid. The result would be pale green beads, as you see here, but with strangely clear areas where once there was jadeite the color of corn husk silk instead of green. Jade is routinely chemically altered like this which is why you don't frequently encounter jade beads such as these. But when this necklace was created in the 1920s or 1930s, the natural properties of the stone were considered beautiful. This pale green was quite in vogue in the 1920s. The beads present a variety of soft green tones with streaks of emerald here and there like little lightning bolts. It's a gorgeous necklace at 23-inches in length. The beads are graduated in size from 4.29mm to 8.98mm and they possess a beautiful old polish as well as high translucency. Coil this necklace in the palm of your hand and it will appear to levitate ever so slightly, such is the effect created by light as it enters these elegant antique beads. The beads are hand-knotted on silk thread and the necklace has a platinum clasp set with a small European cut diamond. When I purchased these beads they had been restrung at some point in the past —the 1970s, judging by the tacky clasp— and they are now properly re-strung on white silk, hand-knotted between each bead, the silk thread wrapped with silver wire at the ends and finished with a period-appropriate clasp. The image you will see on the certificate that ships with the necklace from Stone Group Labs stating the beads are natural untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar) was taken before the necklace was restrung. The origin of the necklace is obviously impossible to determine. Or is it? This color was enormously popular in the 1920s as I said above, and nowhere was it more popular than in England.
