About the Item
This one-of-a-kind necklace features a center drop pendant with a large Tahitian pearl topped by a bale converted from an old 14 karat gold
diamond stickpin.
The pearls are all genuine cultured saltwater Tahitians from our trusted pearl dealer, Seven Seas, with offices in Los Angeles, Japan and Canada. Seven Seas deals only in saltwater cultured pearls -- Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian -- nothing freshwater and nothing from China.
The strand features baroque pearls ranging in size from around 8mm to 11mm. As you can see from the photos, we didn't shy away from ridges, ombre coloring, and odd shapes -- these are the kinds of natural "flaws" we love. But discolored pits or chalky abrasions -- the kinds of flaws we DON'T love -- are nowhere to be seen. This is a gorgeous strand of pearls.
The center Tahitian is 15mm and striking for its dark, pronounced "neck, lovely drop shape and strong green overtone.
The stickpin bale is a rosebud with a pearl rose. Given the age of the stickpin (we think pre-1920) and the shard-like shape of the pearl, it is likely one of three types of pearl: American freshwater (popular at the time), natural saltwater (meaning not cultured), or keshi (non-nucleated).
The diamonds are set in bezels and are lovely, hand-cut stones. The larger stone is textbook Old European Cut. The smaller stone is probably some variation on the Swiss cut. The total diamond weight is estimated at around 0.04 carats.
The pearls are strung on pale golden-colored silk with full knots and finished with a fluted ball clasp in 14 karat gold. We recycled this clasp from another piece and it's around 60 years old -- fully cleaned and polished and entirely functional, of course.
This necklace is just under 16" long and is intended as a choker.
