C. M. Yazzie Navajo Sterling Silver Squash Blossom Necklace

About the Item

A beautiful bench made Navajo squash blossom necklace by C. M. Yazzie. Hand crafted in sterling silver with inlaid natural red coral, abalone mother of pearl and black jet. It features the image of a red cardinal sitting on a branch on each of the blossoms and the horse shoe pendant. The necklace is signed on the back C. M. Yazzie with his mark. Laid flat it measures 28 inches long and weighs 185 grams. The pendant is 2.75 inches wide and 3.13 inches tall. Each disk with cardinal .88 of an inch in diameter. The earrings measure .63 of an inch wide and 1.75 inches long including the wire. The necklace was purchased in the 1970s and remained with the same owner until now. Accompanying the necklace, the owner had a pair of complimentary style sterling earrings signed Barber. The sterling earrings are by Native American husband and wife Henry and Linda Barber. Both pieces sate to the 1970s. On July 6, 2020 a similar C. M. Yazzie squash blossom necklace with cardinals sold at Gateway Gallery Auction for $1,900.00 not including the 18% buyer premium bringing the total to $2,242.00. C. M. (Chee) Yazzie was the husband of Elsie and both were silversmiths. They had 12 children. With a large family to feed while living in a hogan 20 miles south of Gallup, N.M., Chee and Elsie worked together to create concho belts, spoons and other items that he would take into town to sell to one of the local trading posts, supplementing the income Chee made working for the railroad. Many of their children became silversmiths of note including Lee, Raymond and Mary Marie. In 2014 there was an exhibition of the Yazzie family titled Glittering World: Navajo Jewelry of the Yazzie Family. It told their extraordinary story and opened Nov. 13 at the National Museum of the American Indian’s George Gustav Heye Center in New York.
