About the Item
Long necklace comprised of red carnelian. Turquoise, Baltic amber and brass Tibetan beads. Red carnelian is the main stone. The usage of carnelian dates back to antiquity. When I think of carnelian, I primarily think of ancient Romans who made jewelry of it but also cameos, and luxury items like perfume bottles, plates and small vessels. Even today there is a small industry of carnelian carving in the small town of Torre del Greco near Naples.
I love the contrast of the luminous carnelian with the intensely colored turquoise. The turquoise is very clean with very little black matrix..Turquoise has been prized by many cultures of the past, the Chinese and ancient Egyptians among them.
The brass bead inlaid with coral and turquoise is of a type made for centuries in Tibet.
Interspersed at five intervals are spheres of Baltic amber. This material formed tree sap must have been regarded a precious by early man even before the Egyptians.
All of the materials in this piece have ancient origins but it looks quite modern. Admittedly, I’ve taken a bit of inspiration from the Byzantine period. But then again Chanel borrowed from that era heavily early on when she was working with Count Verdura.
