About the Item

This 24" necklace was created between 1950 and 1965 by the iconic San Francisco emporium, Gump's; a store that was famous around the world for its high-quality natural and untreated jade jewelry. The beads are uniform in size and approximately 9 mm in diameter, but each is slightly unique because these natural and untreated Burmese jadeite beads were carved and polished entirely by hand. There are 59 beads and two 25 mm lengths of heavy rose gold chain at the ends, which meet with an early version of what became a slightly thicker but otherwise identical and instantly recognizable Gump's clasp featuring the Chinese Shòu symbol for longevity. There is a safety catch on the clasp, which is tight to begin with. As certified professional gemologist, a second-generation jade collector and the grandson of any avid Gump's jewelry collector and connoisseur, I can say with some authority: this is the finest Gump's jadeite necklace I have ever encountered. It is also perhaps the most unique. For this is no mere "multicolor jade" necklace; a very popular Midcentury trend. Rather, this is a jadeite specimen necklace. What's the difference? In a fine, multi-color jade necklace there will be a palate. Or at the very least "cool tones" versus "warm tones." When multicolored jade necklaces were all the rage in my youth, earth-toned jade beads were enormously popular: browns, orange-reds, olive-greens, mustard-yellow. This specimen bangle is, instead, a showcase for all the colors jadeite jade can be found in: from nearly white to rich, deep green. There is pale lavender, seafood green, red, orange, light blue, moss-on-snow. It's an exquisite necklace composed of such fine beads in colors we almost never see today. Light blue jade? So rare. Deep imperial green? Incredibly rare. This is one of my all-time favorite necklaces. The beads remain on their original string and this string is a twisted bundle of several different strings in different colors. That kind of detail —creative perfection— sets this necklace apart from even other necklaces by this venerable firm. A magnificent and unisex "specimen" statement necklace of the highest quality. The necklace will arrive to you in its original red Gump's presentation box. A truly world-class gem from the most iconic name in fine jade jewelry.
