About the Item
With a creamy texture and high translucency, this 28" necklace is composed of exquisite, fine nephrite jade beads and hand-carved interlocking rings, all joined together by hand-worked 14K yellow gold wire.
Created by the iconic Hawaiian jeweler, Ming's, in the 1960s or 1970s, this stunning, ethereal, and highly unusual necklace features 30 10mm round beads, and 4 sets of 17-19mm interlocking rings -each carved from a single piece of stone. This interlocked carving is often referred to as "devil's work" because of the extensive labor required of the highly skilled and experienced lapidary artist to create.
And although the round beads are just that -round beads- they are no less an achievement because, in person, you cannot help but admire the very soft polish the lapidary artist was able to achieve. The feeling of this necklace, both in the hands and around the neck when worn was clearly a top priority in its creation. The necklace doesn't shine; it glows.
I've photographed it under various lighting conditions so you can see how dynamic and ever-changing the jade is. Pale yellowish green, it can sometimes appear nearly colorless in bright light. Step into the shadows, and somehow the color is transformed into a mood. In some of the photographs, I used almost no light at all and yet the necklace radiates luminosity. It's truly magnificent.
It is finished with Ming's signature clasp featuring the character representing good fortune.
A rare and beautiful and exquisitely crafted necklace that can be worn by anyone, it ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating the nephrite jade is untreated.
