About the Item

Composed of 46 natural, untreated opaque Burmese jadeite jade beads in a soft bluish-green, this beautiful and understated necklace serves as "Exhibit A:" when it comes to demonstrating the unique and surprising beauty of jade. Because the necklace simply shouldn't be as magnificent as it is. After all, when it comes to jadeite jade, translucency is nearly —some would say even more— important than color. Jade can be so translucent that it becomes semi-transparent and you can read printed text right through the water-clear stone. Opaque jade such as the beads you see before you is generally considered less desirable. Keyword: generally. The color of the beads from a gem-lab point of view is "light green," but in reality the beads are more of a "soft powder blue." At least when you're indoors and not standing near a window. When you stand in the sun or sit in a chair beside that window, green somehow rises within the stone to overtake the blue and the beads now look to be more of a "light green" and not a "soft powder blue." The other thing I am wild about with respect to this necklace is the ability of these tenacious beads to absorb all the light they can and stubbornly refuse to relinquish it, as an opaque bead ought to. You see, the more opaque the stone, the more light simply reflects off its surface and back into your face. But these jade beads have just enough translucency to enable them to cling to whatever light reaches them and thus possess this very soft almost painterly glow. When I purchased this necklace the beads were strung on on an early nylon fishing line type of cord with the little 14k yellow beads between each bead and then the generic almond-shaped filigree gold clasp we have all seen endless times. The necklace troubled me because it is undignified for jade to be strung on fishing line. Though of course in the 1960s when this necklace was originally created, nylon was just the IT material. The beads (minus one) were restrung on thick natural silk cord and hand-knotted twice between each bead. The 14K yellow gold beads were then repositioned all together at the rear of the necklace. The original clasp has been replaced with an improved one. The resulting necklace is now ready for many years of wear and enjoyment. The beauty of jade can be arresting and immediate, such as when one is confronted with an imperial jade ring. Or the beauty of jade can be more beguiling, more unexpected and even unexplainable. These jade beads earn your admiration and they hold your attention. The necklace is 19" This necklace ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the beads are natural jadeite from Burma and they are natural and untreated. Please note: the beads were restrung after the beads were certified so the image on the certificate shows the strand as it was originally and not as it appears now, restrung.
