I love rare things. Here's why: you can be the wealthiest person in the world, wake up one morning, stretch and decide, "I want a jadeite and grandidierite beaded necklace." But even though you can afford this necklace no matter how much it costs -where is it? And that's what I love about rare things. Money is simply not enough to acquire them. A degree of luck is involved. Or perhaps serendipity, destiny, or all of the above.

Beautiful: a 20.5" necklace of bluish-green, emerald green, sky blue,
steel blue, natural and untreated grandidierite
natural, untreated jadeite jade beads. These stationed along the strand are 18K yellow gold accent beads and disks, along with cylindrical and round oud wood beads, strung on ridiculously strong kevlar thread. All of the beads are highly translucent and luminous. You may, in fact, in unable to tell the grandidierite from the jadeite, which was intentional. As for the jadeite, some of the beads are from Burma (Myanmar) and some from Guatemala. All are 100% natural and untreated "A" jade.
What's grandidierite? Well, once, it was among the top ten rarest gemstones in the world. Then in 2014 a deposit was found just outside the village of Tranomaro in Southern Madagascar. While the deposit was was a significant find, the amount of gem-quality grandidierite was limited. So although this 2014 find removed grandidierite the list of top-ten rarest gems, it is still far rarer than most gemstones on the planet.
Jadeite is among the rarest and the most valuable gemstones on earth and the finest beaded jade necklaces can sell for hundreds of millions of dollars.
Oud wood -which is also known as agar- is a highly fragrant, valuable resinous wood that develops within the heartwood of several varieties of trees found in Southeast Asia and India that develop a parasitic infection. The infected tree creates a resin to combat the infection and this resin-soaked wood develops a complex, fascinating aroma that has been used many of the world's finest perfumes. This aromatic quality makes Oud wood one of the most expensive "raw materials" in the world.
The oud beads here are not fragrant, like the very old, precious wood beads used in perfume. A super-smeller may be able to detect a slight aroma that is sweet, smoky, earthy, leathery or woody. Deeply aromatic they may not be, but highly beautiful describes them perfectly.
