About the Item

This 1940's cultured Akoya pearl necklace showcases 73 luminous and absolutely gorgeous Japanese cultured Akoya pearls. Freshly strung on platinum silk, these pearls Graduate in size from 5.29mm to 8.86mm. This early cultured Akoya pearl necklace was clearly intended to showcase the splendor of these larger pearls -round, blemish-free cultured saltwater pearls over 7mm were extraordinarily rare in the 1940s. Even today, cultured Akoya pearls 8mm and larger are considered "luxury-sized" pearls, and it took decades of dedicated perfectionism to create such nearly flawless, large round pearls. Most of the pearls you see here measure between 6-7mm, with the largest at the very center like a prize. The pearls have luxuriously thick nacre providing the spectral display of light such classic old pearls are loved for. These white pearls have an almost silvery sheen. Modern cultured pearls of the same size have larger carved round shell beads around with a thinner layer of nacre is deposited by the Pinctada fucata mollusk. As a result, the vast majority of modern cultured akoya pearls do not display "orient" like older cultured pearls and natural pearls. The 14k white gold filigree clasp features a trio of tiny, round-cut diamonds that add sophisticated, understated sparkle at the nape. A splendid vintage necklace for the lover of fine cultured Akoya pearls.

Akoya Pearl Necklace, Diamond Clasp, 9mm Luxury Size Pearls, circa 1980s, Iconic
Located in Northampton, MA
This is a stunning vintage pearl necklace measuring 18 inches in length and composed of 55 9mm-9.4mm round cultured Akoya pearls and finished with an 18K white gold beaded ball clasp which glitters with a multitude of small full-cut diamonds that total approximately .50 carats. The necklace was purchased in the United Kingdom but bears no hallmarks. It's very well-made and remains on its original silk, which still appears sturdy. I believe the necklace dates to the 1980s. Cultured Akoya pearls over 8mm in diameter are the most coveted of all Akoya pearls because fine ones are difficult to achieve. The longer a pearl remains inside the oyster the thicker the nacre and larger it grows but the greater the opportunity for any number of variables to come along and spoil the pearl. These large 9-9.4mm pearls are luminous and stunning: they are creamy-white with a soft pink overtone. The pearls possess a nice, sharp shine. This 18" necklace truly represents the quintessential cultured Akoya pearl necklace...
