About the Item
This beautiful and beautifully simple necklace was handmade in China in the 1920s or into the 1930s during the Republican Era (1912-1949). It was created for export.
The turquoise is consistent in appearance and quality to turquoise from Zhushan County, Hubei Province in China. The range of colors -from the distinctive green, sometimes touched with beige to the rich blue. Turquoise from Zhushan County is very high quality and is relatively hard, so it is often left untreated. Most turquoise is very soft and must be stabilized for use in jewelry.
The glossy, warm orange Mediterranean coral branch beads are the perfect compliment to the turquoise stones.
The silver clasp completes the piece. Whenever possible, I like to leave necklaces on their original string, but the string was frayed so the beads have been freshly restrung on long-lasting cord, knotted between each bead. The drape will improve as the knots loosen and the necklaces "relaxes."
