1960s 9ct gold curb chain with a Victorian 9ct gold, garnet and sapphire snake motif clasp.
Story: I made this necklace by combining two identical curb bracelets, both in 9ct yellow gold and both made in the 1960s. This is a chunky piece, which can be worn both as a necklace, or wrapped around the wrist twice.
This rare and well-preserved snake clasp comes from the late Anthony Gardner's private collection, auctioned for charity. Gardner, a renowned London jewellery dealer, founded The Purple Shop in the 1960s, specialising in Art Nouveau and Arts
Crafts pieces. His shop became a global leader in luxury antiques. I believe Anthony would approve - perfect for seductive wear.

Historical Context: The snake motif in jewellery has a rich history, symbolising eternal life, regeneration, and love, dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece. Popularised in Victorian times by Queen Victoria, it later represented transformation in the Art Nouveau period.
Today, it symbolises wisdom, fertility, and seduction. Used by goldsmiths worldwide, it remains a timeless symbol of life, death, and rebirth, evident in ancient artefacts from various cultures.

- Condition:Polished. Additions or alterations made to the original: Victorian snake clasp added to 1970s chain necklace. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor chipping and surface wear to gemstones, as expected with the age of the piece. The necklace is made up of two near identical bracelets joined together. One half of the necklace contains the original hallmarks on each link.
