This rare and remarkable Vulcanite necklace is a striking example of Victorian craftsmanship and design. Exuding the elegance and symbolism of its era, this piece is perfect for those who appreciate the depth and character of antique jewellery and seek a bold, historic statement.
Crafted from vulcanite—a hardened rubber material popular in the mid to late 19th century—this necklace features a series of large, oval-shaped links with a rich black hue and beautifully smooth finish. Vulcanite was favoured during the Victorian mourning period for its ability to mimic the appearance of jet, while being more durable and moldable into intricate designs.
Invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock, vulcanite is made from the sap of the Ficus tree combined with sulphur. Its use in jewellery became especially widespread after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, when Queen Victoria’s prolonged mourning influenced the fashion of the time. Materials such as jet, bog oak, pressed horn, and vulcanite became highly desirable for their somber aesthetic and symbolic meaning.
