These fancy links came to us in two segments; someone had converted them to bracelets. The Boss, Eytan Brandes, took both bracelets apart, yielding him thirteen inches of these delicious little doo-dads. He made a couple of pairs of earrings (there goes 8 links), leaving him with 10 inches. Too much for a bracelet, too little for a necklace UNTIL he hit upon the idea of simply finishing the ends with some rope chain. The finished product is a 16" necklace perfect for wearing alone or at the top of your neck mess. We don't really know how old the links are or whether those two bracelets represented the entirety of the original length. If so, then it was probably a vest chain. We think the chain was probably made in the late 1800s, but it's hard to say without any hallmarks or even a clue as to what the chain was used for in the first place! Each link starts with an open diamond-shaped frame orbiting around a little ring; each ring has what looks like a hand-cut design (it could have been cast into the mold, but since every design looks a little different, there's at least some benchwork going on here!) Finally, inside the ring are two tiny "rope" rings. Each little cage is connected to the next with a connector ring, and each connector ring is soldered to one end of a link. They don't make them like this anymore! The rope chain at each end is a good match for these links because rope chains have been around even longer than ridiculously fancy fancy links. The two designs look very harmonious together -- no generational culture clashes here! The fancy links are not stamped but test as 10K gold. The rope chain is 14K gold. The closure is the original bayonet clasp that came with the rope chain. It's stamped "14K" on the tongue piece and has a figure 8 safety catch. There are no other hallmarks; we can provide photos of the acid test results if you are interested.
