About the Item

The necklace is made of twelve oval micromosaics of degrading dimensions made of red glass and inserted into a yellow gold frame. The micromosaic technique was born in Rome in 1775 – replacing the more traditional wooden or semi-precious stone inlays – and soon found diffusion as a souvenir for rich foreigners visiting for the Grand Tour until the end of the 19th century. The peculiarity of this necklace lies in the choice of red glass, less widespread than the colour black, thus giving uniqueness and prominence to the depictions of Roman views and ruins that decorate each micromosaic and which can still be admired from life today. In addition to the excellent state of conservation of the micromosaics, the refinement of the frame stands out: the micromosaics are connected via three thin gold threads which ensure solidity to the composition, while maintaining a visually light and refined appearance.
