About the Item
Here we have a gorgeous unsigned Art Deco necklace from Marsh and Co. A blackened steel circular frame plays host to glorious round faceted old cut diamond. This ensemble is accentuated by three diamond set channels; two of which are suspended from a duo of pearl set chains. This theme is continued again in a smaller fashion as we move up the necklace where we find a slim platinum belcher chain fastened with a matching bolt ring.
Marsh and Co. began producing their own unique style of jewellery in San Francisco in the 1930s. These pieces were distinctive for their combined use of industrial looking oxidized steel with precious gems traditionally used in Asia such as jade, pearls and coral. The highly unusual, black patinated steel used in the firm’s jewellery was created by an Italian born jeweller who worked for Marsh as means to combat rusting, however, the unique look gave birth to a distinctive style.
With the business closing in 2001, Marsh jewellery from the 30s, 40s and 50s is rare and extremely collectible and although rarely signed, the pieces are identifiable due to their distinctive appearance and use of materials.
