The dictionary definition of “ Cabochon” reads: noun, plural cabochons 1. a precious stone of convex hemispherical or oval form, polished but not cut into facets. 2. an ornamental motif resembling this, either concave or convex and often surrounded by ornately carved leaf patterns, often used on furniture of the 18th century. Cabochon (/ˈkæbəˌʃɒn/), from the Middle French word caboche (meaning "head"), is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. Cutting in cabochon (French: "in the manner of a cabochon") is usually applied to opaque gems, Several different semi precious stones may be used to create what is popularly called a “cabochon” today. This set is just simply stunning! The necklace features a large pendant with a beautiful yellow stone centerpiece; the cabochon cut gives it dimension as well as added visual appeal. I believe the stones are pale yellow jade on both the medallion and clip-on earrings. Yellow jade comes from two varieties of jade: jadeite and nephrite, which also comes in white and green. ( both of which are also often found on Haskell jewellery) The semi-precious yellow stones may be translucent or opaque. This necklace has an 11 1/2 inch gold tone metal loop chain with a circle spring clasp. Interestingly, the medallion in gold tone metal is done in a rich filigree style; this lacy look is so typical of Haskell's style. The pale yellow cabochon cut stone in the centre is encircled by a chain of eight blood red stones with leaf style caps at each end.. The oval cartouche on the reverse of the medallion is marked MIRIAM HASKELL, indicating a 1950's piece. The clip-on earrings feature one large and one small matching pale yellow stone. The set is a knock-out example of Haskell quality and is in excellent vintage condition.
