History of South Sea Cultured Pearls: South Sea pearls are formed in the white or gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima oyster (cultivated in the waters of Australia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand. In the Philippines, the oysters are still harvested by "traditional" divers without any special equipment is collected. South Sea cultured core pearls are raised in isolated bays of the purest water. After 3 or 4 months, an X-ray is taken of each oyster to confirm that the core has not been shed by the oyster. After confirmation, the Oysters back into the sea to continue breeding for another 2-3 years, due to the long 2-3 year breeding period, South Sea pearls develop an exceptionally thick layer of mother-of-pearl (from 2 to 6 millimeters). with special care not to damage it.If the oyster is healthy, a new nucleus will be implanted again ert - a process that can be repeated up to 4 times for a single oyster. Fine South Sea cultured pearls look just like natural pearls. Due to their rarity, their enormous size and their silky luster, South Sea pearls are traded at the highest prices. South Sea pearls are extremely rare for two important reasons: First, the Pinctada Maxima oyster is a wild species of oyster, so one can never be sure of the numbers available for farming. On the other hand, the cultivation period is very long and, with all types of pearl, the probability that the pearl will become defective increases the longer it is in the oyster. Because of this, large, round, non-faulty pearls are always extremely rare.
