About the Item

This late Art Deco era (circa 1939) double strand of cultured Akoya pearls represents the finest, most luxurious pearls of their day. Today, we are accustomed to perfectly spherical pearls with a blemish-free surface. But when this necklace was created, the process of Akoya pearl culturing had not yet been perfected. Th result is a double strand of pearls that resemble natural, un-cultured pearls more than they do cultured pearls. Composed of 155 creamy white graduated cultured Akoya pearls. measuring from 3mm to just above 8mm, this double-strand necklace features an exquisite 18K clasp set with four small, beautiful old-cut diamonds. The clasp bears marks from France. Because these pearls hail from the early days of the cultured pearl farming industry, they were allowed to remain in the cold seawater for a longer period of time than modern Akoya pearls. The resulting pearls have thick nacre that gives them a luminous quality known as orient; the spectral display of color that seems to flicker just below the surface of natural pearls -and early cultured pearls. Almost no modern cultured pearls display orient, of natural pearls, which are solid nacre. The pearls also have surface blemishes and imperfections -also like natural pearls. The luxurious, creamy pearls have a lovely pink overtone. A double strand of vintage cultured Akoya pearls is the definition of timeless glamour. I think they are so much richer and more beautiful than modern Akoya pearls, there is simply no comparison. This 16" double stand necklace ships with a GIA certificate attesting to their pedigree as cultured Akoya pearls.

Akoya Pearl Necklace, Diamond Clasp, 9mm Luxury Size Pearls, circa 1980s, Iconic
Located in Northampton, MA
This is a stunning vintage pearl necklace measuring 18 inches in length and composed of 55 9mm-9.4mm round cultured Akoya pearls and finished with an 18K white gold beaded ball clasp which glitters with a multitude of small full-cut diamonds that total approximately .50 carats. The necklace was purchased in the United Kingdom but bears no hallmarks. It's very well-made and remains on its original silk, which still appears sturdy. I believe the necklace dates to the 1980s. Cultured Akoya pearls over 8mm in diameter are the most coveted of all Akoya pearls because fine ones are difficult to achieve. The longer a pearl remains inside the oyster the thicker the nacre and larger it grows but the greater the opportunity for any number of variables to come along and spoil the pearl. These large 9-9.4mm pearls are luminous and stunning: they are creamy-white with a soft pink overtone. The pearls possess a nice, sharp shine. This 18" necklace truly represents the quintessential cultured Akoya pearl necklace...
