About the Item
This Art Deco jadeite jade necklace features 29 11mm tender, young green Burmese jadeite beads, each of which was hand-carved and polished without the use of electricity or modern polishing aids. Jade beads of this size are uncommon. They have the softest and most luxurious polish; not a piano shine like modern jade but rather a silky polish that feels amazing next to the skin. A carved plaque depicting peaches is securely set within an engraved silver frame and serves as the clasp. The necklace measures 17 inches. The carved plaque and the beads themselves display natural stone grain and fissures: these are not cracks but rather inherent qualities of the stone.
This light, fresh green color was enormously popular throughout the Art Deco era. This also happened to be the era of increased trade with China and a fascination with all things Chinese. So a necklace in the most coveted shade of green, made from the most Chinese of all Chinese gems: jade. This would have been a necklace to silence a room when you entered. Even though the beads are opaque, they retain a mystical translucency, which nearly gives them the illusion of resting just above the surface of the skin.
It is an exceptionally fine example of this style of necklace with a carved plaque clasp. The necklace has been freshly restrung on a sturdy white silk cord and it ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).

Created by hand between 1910-1920, this 21" strand of natural, untreated, Burmese jadeite jade possesses an ethereal, luminous beauty. Though they have been classified as "pale green to near colorless" in the gem lab report, each bead is has its own subtle tone. True, from a distance the beads read as white. But then, step into the shadows and their subtle tones are liberated. The tones are there in the light, too: it's just that sometimes looking isn't enough; you need to look but you also need to see.
I think this is a spectacular strand for the subtlety of the tone and the quality of translucence. I've used low light to shoot them, so that you can see how gorgeous they are i the lowest of light.
