A late Victorian pearl and diamond tiara, to the centre a cluster in the form of a flowerhead, set with seven pearls and forty-two old European and rose-cut diamonds, to two graduated openwork slides each slide set with eleven pearls graduating in size, surrounded by one hundred and five old European and rose-cut diamonds, the diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 11 carats, converting to necklace with detachable back section, set with twenty-one old European-cut diamonds set alternatively with nineteen natural pearls, the diamonds estimated to weigh a further total of 3.75 carats, all mounted in silver and yellow gold, circa 1890, the tiara measuring approximately 3.3 x 16cm, gross weight 52.7 grams, This antique tiara is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as 14ct gold and silver, with 9ct gold frame. This stunning and sophisticated tiara comes from the collection of Bentley Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. No other piece of jewellery quite captures the imagination like the tiara: it is a romantic, striking piece. This particular tiara was made in the late Victorian period, in around 1890, and features a wonderful pearl and diamond design. The central pearl and diamond cluster is emblematic of design of this period, and the shape of the tiara has a sense of neoclassical simplicity. This tiara, like most from the time period, converts into a magnificent necklace when taken off the yellow gold frame. This gives the piece a spectacular versatility. This piece would be a striking and elegant addition to a bride’s wedding day ensemble and would serve as the idea “something old”.
