About the Item

Rare vintage AUGUSTE BONAZ France signed Art Deco Galalith* necklace. Superb geometric shape with black and moire off-white colors. Signature engraved at the back. Metal barrel screw closing clasp. Circa 1925s. Excellent vintage condition. Measurements: necklace inner circumference is 17.32 in. (44 cm) - central pendant is 1.69 in. wide (4.3 cm) x 1.69 in. high (4.2 cm) About the Maker: The Bonaz factory was founded at the end of the 19th century by Cesar BONAZ. Early work used horn for hair ornaments and various other accessories. Auguste BONAZ starts working with his father and took over the management in 1900, with the assistance of his wife, Marguerite. The craft production of ornamental combs, highly fashionable at that time, developed rapidly with the discovery of new materials, Celluloid and Galalith. Auguste unfortunately died in 1922, and his widow, Marguerite Marie Bailly continued the firm and made the name of Auguste Bonaz famous. The production of combs, but also creating fashionable jewelry collection, including necklaces, earrings, brooches and bracelets typical of the Art Deco period, as well as magnificent Galalith boxes and accessories. Despite their jewelry being made of non-precious materials, they exhibited at the 1925 exhibition Arts Décoratifs et Industriels in Paris. The striking originality of design and materials made these pieces very desirable in the 1970s, when Art Deco was recognized as one of the most important and influential design movements of the 20th century. Necklaces and bracelets by Bonaz were purchased by art collectors and dealers like Ilyana Sonnabend and Andy Warhol. Today, these pieces have become almost impossible to find, but continue to attract attention for their revolutionary design. *Galalith (milk stone) or Casein (sometimes called French Bakelite) is a registered trade mark, patented in the 1890s in Bavaria. Mostly produce in Europe during the first part of the 20th century, this semi-synthetic plastic (Casein is the generic name), is made from skimmed milk curdled with rennet. Cured by long immersion in formaldehyde, it became a useful thermosetting material, which can be carved or embossed in beautiful patterns. It's color doesn't change over time. The colors you can find are mostly plain opaque colors, sometimes with marbling or translucency. Galalith pieces are machined, sanded or hand-finished and therefore there should be no marks left on them (in opposition to cheap mass produced plastics), so all pieces are seamless and this material belonging to the plastic family such as Bakelite, or Celluloid or Lucite is considered to be a top quality chunky plastic. Galalith is impossible to test like genuine American Bakelite because the chemical composition is : milk protein hardened with formaldehyde. Tests for Bakelite are testing the phenol component of the material which is nonexistent in Galalith (replace by milk protein).
