This exquisite hand-cut turquoise collar necklace by Santo Domingo (Kewa) artist Jolene Bird beautifully combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. The necklace is composed of 31 rectangular inlaid segments, each meticulously arranged to form a harmonious mosaic of natural color and texture. The reverse side is lined with Mother of Pearl, adding a soft iridescence that complements the vivid turquoise tones.

About the Artist
Jolene Bird (Kewa, b. 1963) is a distinguished lapidary artist and jeweler from Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. Taught by her grandfather, she learned early to identify and work with high-grade stones central to traditional Santo Domingo inlay. She later refined her craft through formal study in silversmithing at the Poeh Institute and Art Center in Pojoaque Pueblo.
Bird’s work is celebrated for its precision, symmetry, and vibrant color palette. Each piece is hand-cut and finished with exceptional care, resulting in jewelry that is both deeply rooted in cultural tradition and visually striking in contemporary form. Her creations have been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Santa Fe Indian Market, and other major venues, earning her multiple awards for excellence in stone inlay craftsmanship.
