A beautifully late 19th-century necklace crafted by the celebrated silversmith and jeweler J.M. van Kempen
Zonen, one of the most renowned houses of the period. Known for their refined craftsmanship and elegant designs, the firm produced jewels that balanced timeless wearability with the artistry of the Dutch goldsmith tradition.
The necklace, also known as a staafjescollier (bar link necklace), is constructed from finely articulated gold links forming a delicate gallery chain. From this base suspends a rhythmic fringe of alternating openwork diamond-shaped motifs and slender gold bars, each terminating in a luminous seed pearl. This clever alternation creates balance and movement, with the pearls adding a gentle shimmer against the warm glow of the gold. When worn, the necklace sits gracefully at the collar, the pearls catching the light with every motion.
The jewel retains its original extension piece, allowing it to be worn either at its standard length or slightly elongated. Both necklace and extension are fitted with secure box clasps with safety catches, a detail that demonstrates the care and practicality of late 19th-century craftsmanship. The complete set is presented in its original fitted case, bearing the signature of J.M. van Kempen
