About the Item
This diamond necklace has the stark simplicity, sleek lines, and geometric elements of an opulent piece from the Art Deco period; however, it is made in the 21st century, 2020. Crafted in 18K white and yellow gold; the 16.25-inch (41.28 cm) necklace suspending a 2 x 0.63-inch (5.08 x 1.60 cm) pendant is set with white and yellow diamonds weighing an estimated 5.50 carats total. The yellow diamonds are round brilliant cut, and the white diamonds are round and baguette of G-H color and VS clarity, and pear-shape of SI-I clarity. The weight of the necklace is 20.40 grams.
The details and arrangement of diamonds certainly demonstrate technical prowess and an artistic sensibility in tune with the Jazz Age. The diamond link chain is comprised of a varied yet repeated pattern of bezel settings, alternating round-square-round-oval. Both trompe l’oeil and group bezel settings are used as was the custom of the time, to vary the look of the stones, make the most of a minimalist palette, and create a dynamic composition. The yellow round diamonds are set with prongs in square yellow gold bezels, making the diamonds look square. Groups of three round white diamonds are set with prongs in an oval white gold bezel. Moreover, each setting is dotted on the borders with milgrain, another technique popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries where small grains of metal were used to complement the gemstones and extend the sparkle.
Milgrain is carried through to the pendant, which is a streamlined, linear masterpiece. The pendant is suspended with a round bezel-set diamond borrowing the element from the chain, and a baguette diamond that will be repeated in various groupings in the pendant. It is a thoughtful transition that relates to the piece at large. The pendant has a symmetrical architectural look, borrowing angular lines perhaps from China, as was considered “exotic” and fascinating during the period. The pendant suspends a pear shape diamond surrounded by a halo of yellow diamonds, creating delicate movement between two groupings of baguette diamonds. The piece is the true definition of economy of form, making the most out of every beautiful element.
Necklace measures approx. 16.5 (42 cm) inches. Pendant measures approx. 2” (5 cm) x .0625” (1.6 cm). Pear, round brilliant, and baguette-cut diamonds weight a total of approximately 5.50 carats, most estiamted G-H color and VS clarity; pear-shaped diamond with SI-I clarity. Overall weight approx. 20.40 grams, made in and stamped 18K white gold. Excellent condition, circa 2020.
