About the Item
Important Arts and Crafts Galleon Necklace by an extraordinary, anonymous period jeweler circa 1910, likely made in the Boston area of sterling silver and gold. Incredible detailing with original fitted box. The central motif is a gold galleon set with a large amazing Black opal (12mm x 10mm), likely of Australian origin. The ship also has a waving gold flag set beneath a gold shell motif with natural pearl, set between silver links that replicate more ships sailing through stormy seas.
Above are a pair of citrine set ships wheel motifs which link to ship pulleys' in gold and silver with an amazing anchor clasp, all of which is fully hand made and articulated.
This is a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts era, and certainly created by a prominent jeweler of the period such a F.G. Hale, although it is unsigned. The ship motif is a common theme in the Arts and Crafts period and is visible in pottery, paintings, jewelry and the Decorative Arts of the era. This was obviously an important custom hand made commission in the period for a prestigious client. 1900s USA. Length 18", Central motif 2.75" x 2".
