About the Item
This is a very fine example of a sterling silver, onyx and marcasite jewelry from the Art Deco period.
The design is adapted from High Jewelry of the Art Deco Period and heavily influenced by Cartier et. al. The look is very elegant.
The craftsmanship is superb as is the design.
The marcasite stones are hand set into sterling silver and catch the light in a sparkling fashion similar to small diamonds.
Marcasite jewelry has a long history dating from ancient times .
This jewelry gained tremendous popularity under Queen Victoria after Albert's death. The Queen required the court to abstain from opulent jewelry and to avoid opulent jewelry and required her court to wear black.
During this period marcasite and onyx became quite popular with the English court and aristocracy. Marcasite had a tremendous revival during the 1920s and 30s of the 20th Century as a substitute from the diamond jewelry of the time.
