A very special piece by a much sought after maker of costume jewellery. This necklace dates from the 1950s. Its construction and design is exemplary. Condition Report: Very Good - Minor scratching to the surface of some of the faux pearls and one cabochon. This is consistent with the necklace's age and only visible upon very close inspection. The Details... This necklace is silver tone and features a 'box' chain. It is 40cm in length - what is known as a 'Princess' style. It fastens with a fold-over clasp and also has a saftey chain for added security, allowing you to feel confident about wearing this collectable piece. To add detail, some of the silver tone findings have been engraved with a linear design. All of the stones are held in place by ornate claws and the reverse of the panels that the stones are set within are well crafted in a 'frilled' design. The stones are faux pearls and oxblood, mottled glass cabochons. It is a 'Lavaliere' style of necklace, which features smaller stones, culminating in a larger stone that hangs from the front and centre. The necklace is signed with an oval shaped plate that reads 'Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer'. A Short History... This piece can be dated to the 1950s as the London based designer Mitchel Maer created for the House of Dior between 1952 and 1956. The necklace is emblematic of his penchant for Victorian styles - note the deep oxblood colouring of the cabochons remeniscent of the dark colourways of mourning jewellery and the gothic style claw settings for the stones. Maer's designs are exceptionally wearable and his skill with metal work can be seen in this piece - the reverse of the necklace being almost as detailed as the front. Such thoughtful construction means that this necklace has and will stand the test of time. Wear it With... Take your lead from the gothic nature of this piece and wear it with a black high neck jumper, dark leather trousers or skirt and oxblood ankle boots, to pick out the tones in the necklace.
