Necklace: The antique filigree 14 Karat gold and garnets necklace composed of nine oval facetted garnets, two drop shape facetted garnets and ten golden flowers includes seven small garnets in each of them, a couple of rhombus parts beside the clasp is also set with a rhombus garnet and four small garnets around. Clasp: The clasp can be worn in front, because it looks like a brooch, which is made of gold, decorated with filigree and the main part is covered by glass. Under the glass there is a picture made of strands of hair and also has initials "M.R.W." Size: 2,5x2,2cm. NOTICE! The clasp is in different color of gold, that is possibility that is was missing and changed. Hair Jewellery: The Georgians and Victorians were very fond of hair jewelry. The following excerpt extolling the virtues of hair work is from Godey's Lady's Book circa 1863: "Hair is at once the most delicate and last of our materials and survives us like love. It is so light, so gentle, so escaping from the idea of death, that, with a lock of hair belonging to a child or friend we may almost look up to heaven and compare notes with angelic nature, may almost say, I have a piece of thee here, not unworthy of thy being now." What is bootjesketting? The BOOTJESKETTING is part of the typical Dutch jewelry heritage. This type of jewellery piece can be seen in museums. Some descriptions characterize this as typical for the northern Dutch provinces Groningen and Friesland. Translating the name of "Bootjesketting" could be like "chain of little boats". Technique: Filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal.
