About the Item
Created in the late 1930s to early 1940s, this Retro 18K gold and diamond tubogas necklace was made in France. The necklace is designed as a tapering tubogas link chain mounted with a polished domed center flanked by concave crescents, highlighted by star-set round-cut diamonds. Inspired by the forms of industry, this jewel is a streamlined representative of early French jewelry modernism and its return to gold.

In the early 1930s, Parisian high jewelers made a bold return to gold. Many of the famous maison offered astonishingly original necklaces and bracelets of "tubogas" or "tuyau à gaz", a novel, highly flexible gold chain derived from industrial forms relating to the combustion engine. One commentator noted that the aesthetic of the decade had "an air of syncopated jazz" inspired by a sensational song and dance routine called "Lambeth Walk" which featured in the popular London musical "My Girl and Me".
