We are honored to present this iconic Amethyst, Turquoise and Sterling Silver MATL set of necklace and earrings from the personal collection of Secretary Madeleine Albright.
The spectacular and dramatic necklace and earrings by Matilde Poulat are among the finest museum quality Mexican Silver Necklace and Earring Suites. The pieces are both signed MATL in large script. They epitomize the iconic reputation Poulat had for her artistry in creating exquisite and dramatic wearable works of art. Educated as an artist and designer, Matilde Poulat of Mexico City, better known as MATL, turned her talented hands to jewelry making in 1934. Poulat befriended Diego Rivera while in art school and later fashioned jewelry expressly for Frida Kahlo, his wife.
The necklace and earrings are large stunning jewels with considerable dramatic impact. The jewels have an abundance of pyramidal cut natural Amethyst gems throughout along with beautiful turquoise cabochons. The necklace and earrings in Sterling Silver are completely articulated. Thus the necklace drapes like a gown around the neck and the earrings dangle and shimmer with delicate beauty. The necklace is 20 inches long and the earrings are 2 1/4 inches long. Worn individually or together they are some of the finest pieces of Mexican Silver jewelry created. It is very rare to find these large silver and gem set pieces by Matilde Poulat. The hand made elements of the pieces are evident throughout and give these jewels such a sense of history and design.
Madeleine Albright was the first woman to serve as Secretary of State. As Ambassador to the United Nations and Secretary of State, Albright was often the only woman in the room during critical discussions with her diplomatic colleagues and counterparts, who were virtually all men. In such gatherings, Albright followed the advice she had given as a professor to her female students: “Do not be afraid to interrupt. A woman usually prefers to size up a situation before speaking, but for a diplomat representing the United States, silence was not an option.”
During her trailblazing diplomatic career, Secretary Albright discovered the power of jewelry to convey foreign policy messages. As shared in her book Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box, she deployed pins within her “personal diplomatic arsenal” to express her hopes, mood, and often a pointed message. She utilized this unconventional and effective tool for diplomacy on America’s behalf. Albright said the pins served as “gentle implements of statecraft, teaching tools and a different form of communication.” She knew that the idea of using pins as a diplomatic tool was not found in any State Department manual or text chronicling American foreign policy. She explained that “the truth is that it would never have happened if not for Saddam Hussein.”
The poet-in-residence of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein called Albright “an unparalleled serpent” when she was the Ambassador to the United Nations. Shortly thereafter, when preparing to meet with Iraqi officials, Albright decided to make a diplomatic statement by wearing a pin with a serpent wrapped around a stick. Although her method of communication was new, her message was as old as the American Revolution – Don’t Tread on Me! From that day on, pins became part of her diplomatic signature. Albright chose pins ahead of meetings with foreign dignitaries to signal her diplomatic position. Indeed, freedom and democracy had no greater champion than Secretary Madeleine K. Albright.
As Secretary Albright says in her book, "Flowers, too, are abundant in my collection. Like animals and bugs, various species of flora have acquired a distinctive meaning in literature and lore. Flowers are usually for happier times."
