About the Item
A beautiful late 19th century natural red coral necklace, crafted with two strands of beautifully matched barrel-shaped coral beads, each measuring approximately 9 mm in diameter. The coral beads are individually knotted on red thread, both to protect the coral and to create a luxurious drape around the neck.
The necklace is secured with an exquisite round clasp, finely detailed in silver with a rim of 14 karat gold. The clasp features a central old-cut diamond, surrounded by a cluster of sixteen additional old-cut diamonds, totaling seventeen in all. The diamonds are mounted in raised, dome-shaped settings that create depth and brilliance. On either side, the clasp is accented with crescent-shaped silver elements known as “krabben” (crabs), each adorned with three old-cut diamonds, adding further sparkle and refinement.
Necklaces of this kind were traditionally worn by West Frisian women in the northern Netherlands between circa 1880–1900, and they remain a testament to the rich Dutch cultural heritage of coral and diamond jewelry.
