About the Item
An exceptionally elegant torsade necklace comprising twenty rows of size matched cultured fresh water pearls. The necklace, designed as a choker, terminates in a wonderfully elegant 18 karat gold oversized clasp that can be worn at the front, rear, or side of necklace. The clasp is of notably high quality, featuring 68 round brilliant diamonds weighing a total of approximately 4.53 carats, the diamonds framing a large oval shaped Sardinian cabochon coral, a very rich shade of orange bleeding into red.
Enjoying a well deserved renaissance in the 1980s (and again today), torsade necklaces are characterized by their twisted rows of beads which meet in a large clasp, and in fact torsade literally means "twist" in French. Torsade necklaces can be traced back as far as ancient Egypt. The color palette on this vintage example certainly embodies certain principles of the Egyptian Revival aesthetic movement.
