About the Item
The landlocked Republic of Zambia, located in southeastern Africa, is one of the world’s premier sources of fine emeralds. Though emerald exploration in the region began in the late 1920s, the remarkable Kafubu emerald fields—located 45 kilometers southwest of Kitwe—were only discovered in the mid-1970s. Nestled at an altitude of 1,200 meters, the area is drained by the Kafubu River and is characterized by clay-rich soils and dense vegetation.
Emerald formation in Kafubu is geologically rare and occurred approximately 450 million years ago, during the Pan-African orogeny. Here, chromium-bearing talc-chlorite-actinolite schists were intruded by pegmatites and hydrothermal veins, allowing emeralds to grow in phlogopite-rich reaction zones. These unique conditions contribute to the exceptional quality and distinct color profile of Zambian emeralds.
