About the Item
A Victorian natural pearl an diamond necklace, consisting of three graduating from the centre diamond set snakes, each coiled snake set with old-cut diamonds with cabochon ruby-set eyes suspending a pear-shaped natural pearl, the diamonds estimated to weigh 5 carats in total, set in silver to yellow gold back, connected by three rows of pearls, accompanied by GCS Report stating to be natural saltawater, to a concealed snake clasp of matching design, circa 1870, measuring approximately 38 x 4.2 cm, gross weight 36 grams.
This necklace is in very good condition. Unmarked tested as silver, 18ct and 14ct gold.
This charming mid-Victorian necklace comes from the collection of Bentley
Skinner, Jewellers by Royal Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III. Three strands of lustrous natural pearls are set with four diamond and ruby coiled snake motifs with that at the back serving as a clasp. Serpent motifs were extremely popular in the mid-nineteenth century and symbolised everlasting love. These coiled serpents are set with sparkling diamonds and have bright and vibrant ruby eyes. This exquisite piece would look stunning worn with an evening gown with a low neckline for an eye-catching statement.
