Our 18K yellow gold, diamond and antique intaglio seal pendant depicts The Three Graces appears, glowing with incredible depth and dimension. The daughters of Zeus - Euphrosyne (joy), Aglaia (radiance), and Thalia (beauty) - inspire this piece. We felt its connection to Venus and echoed the elegance of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus in the setting design. Set in a Victorian-inspired buttercup setting of 18k yellow gold, each scallop lined with brilliant cut, graduated diamonds (.55ctw) in a patina underlay that makes the stones sparkle brilliantly. This one-of-a-kind statement necklace is equally stunning with evening wear or a simple t-shirt and jeans. The cameo at the center of this exceptional pendant is a stunning example of the art of gem engraving during the Renaissance. It likely dates to the early 17th century and features a sacrificial scene inspired by the Greco-Roman era. The central flaming altar is flanked by two figures preparing to sacrifice a ram, while a figure in a lion skin blowing horns stands in the left corner. The carver brilliantly uses the natural layers of the stone to achieve the illusion of shadow and musculature on the figures. A second, smaller cameo is set at the top of the pendant, while a myriad of multi-colored gems, pearls and enamel adorns the 18K gold setting. A large Baroque pearl suspended from an enamel dragon finishes the design, which embodies the opulence and theatricality of jewels from the Renaissance age.
Cameos and intaglios were highly popular amongst wealthy connoisseurs in Renaissance Italy, and owning the finest pieces was the privilege of princes. Although they were often elaborately mounted for display alone, cameos were also frequently worn as pendants, surrounded by enameled and stone-set gold frames. Such pieces were particularly prized by the Medici and Lorraine families, many of which can now be seen at the National Archeological Museum in Florence.

HISTORY
This unique design features two youthful male heads positioned side by side, one upright and the other inverted. This captivating motif has been variously interpreted as representing the Dioscuri, the rising and setting sun, or the two branches of the river Danube.
The Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, epitomised courage and bravery and were especially revered by soldiers and cavalry. Renowned as protectors of sailors, they were believed to have the power to calm seas and still winds. In Rome, their legendary intervention at the Battle of Lake Regillus in 496 B.C. secured a pivotal victory for the Romans against the Latins. Their legacy was celebrated with annual games featuring horse racing on January 27th, highlighting their strong association with horsemanship.
The constellation Gemini is intrinsically linked to the Dioscuri. Sharing the same mother, Leda, Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, while Pollux was the divine offspring of Zeus. Together, they joined Jason on the Argo and famously saved the ship from a deadly storm. When Castor perished in battle, Pollux implored Zeus to reunite them.
