About the Item

A dramatic Mauboussin 18k gold and malachite pendant necklace, circa 1980s. Designed in rich yellow gold, the necklace features two large circular pendants set with inlaid malachite panels. The intense green of the malachite, with its signature banded striations, contrasts with the sculpted gold edges framing each element. This pendant necklace is composed of alternating oval malachite slices, bezel-set in gold, connected by textured gold floral links. Its generous length allows it to be worn as a statement piece over clothing, in keeping with the era’s maximalist trends. The large scale of both the pendant and the chain reflects the 1980s taste for eye-catching, expressive jewelry. This collectible piece by Mauboussin Paris is a perfect example of high level of design and quality associated with the French luxury house. The necklace is fully marked with the maker’s mark, a serial number, and a workshop stamp. The necklace is made of 18 karat yellow gold and malachite. The vintage necklace measures 30" x 1/2" (80 x 1/3 centimeters); the pendant part measures 4" x 2" (10 x 5 centimeters); the circles in the pendant measure 2" (5 centimeters) and 1 1/4" (3 centimeters) in diameter. The vintage French necklace weighs 196.5 grams. The Mauboussin necklace is stamped with Mauboussin maker's marks, place of manufacture, serial number and maker's workshop mark. About Mauboussin Brand: The history of Mauboussin rooted in 1827, despite all the historical events that were shaking France those years. The House was called Maison Noury, with Jean-Baptiste Noury being a head of the company. In 1880 Noury’s nephew, Georges Mauboussin, started to work for the firm as an apprentice. Nine years later he took over control of the company. From the start Mauboussin’s success was challenged by his competitors, established companies Mellerio and Wièze and upcoming Cartier and Boucheron. During the Roaring Twenties Mauboussin was using jade, shellac and colored stones carved in India. Those unconventional materials brought him great success embodied in multiple major international awards. Celebrities were often wearing Maison’s jewelry for their high-end magazine photoshoots. That brought fame to Mauboussin jewelry in the artistic and glamorous world. In 1936 Mauboussin and the New York jeweler Trabert Hoeffer became partners. They opened their stores across the United States. Among Trabert Hoeffer-Mauboussin’s clients were Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich and Paulette Godard. In the 1950s one of the most influential designers René Lacaze often set jewelry trends. Since a lot of his designs were made for Mauboussin, the pieces of the latter became widely popular. It was a celebration of the colored stones, turquoise, coral and bright enamel. A few decades later this openness to new approaches and materials resulted in the Nadia ring. The name came from “nacre” (pearl in French) and “diamant”. Being authentic and universally understood, the ring quickly gained its popularity. In 1994, Mauboussin started making watches under the moto “Combining Swiss technical expertise with French creativity.” Mauboussin watch collections feature an extensive design range, from sprots models to evening wear pieces. Until today the House of Mauboussin stays independent. Over 200-year-old jewelry brand created close relationship with its clientele. Due to a deep understanding of the clients’ requests, the maker can respond to the modern demanding lifestyle with a strong soulful vision.

About the Brand: Aldo Cipullo is mostly known as a creator of the famous Cartier Love bracelet. However, he designed several iconic pieces, and his talent was appreciated by David Webb and Tiffany & Co. His father was a costume jewelry maker, and Aldo worked as an apprentice at one of his workshops. But Cipullo’s ambition went further than Italy where he was born. After he turned 23, he moved to New York to study at The School of Visual Arts. In 1969 Aldo Cipullo started to work for Cartier, and his glorious journey began. Very soon after Cipullo came up with the idea of Cartier Love bracelet. The new design made a big splash in the jewelry world. It was a completely new perspective of the classic look. There is a story behind creating Love bracelet. It says Cipullo was heartbroken at that time after a failed love affair. He wanted to lock in his memories as it was all he had left. Being fascinated by industrial features of New York City and all things hardware, he drew his first draft of the bracelet. Another emblematic piece by Cipullo called Juste en Clou (Just a Nail) came up in 1971. The minimalist, wrapped around nail-looking gold bracelet was a great success. Today the yellow gold, rose gold and white gold Cartier Nail bracelet...

About Ippolita Brand: Established in 1999 in New York, is a jewelry brand that reached a perfect balance between art and craftsmanship. The brand was founded by an Italian designer Ippolita Rostagno. After graduated from the Istituto d’Arte in Florence where she studied sculpture, Ippolita wanted to implement her “love of sculpture into a form of wearable art.” Today jewelry by Ippolita is made by hands and celebrates women of all ages. Since the designer added precious and semi-precious colored stones to her vocabulary, they became a cornerstone of the brand’s aesthetics. Mother-of-pearl, turquoise, malachite, rock crystal embodying Rostagno's love of nature, sculpture, and raw materials. Ippolita pieces are made for everyday wearing, however they are meticulously made. Here is where Italian heritage plays its part. Amazing hammered metal textures and curvy organic shapes are crafted by using modern technologies and traditions of old craftsmanship. About Italian jewelry: Italian Jewelry History Italian jewelry style is deeply rooted in the history of the region. The beginning of it can be marked as far as 700 BC. What we consider today as the Italian style was impacted by the ancient Greek, Roman and Etruscan cultures. Italian jewelry of all time is mostly made of yellow gold. This metal has been favored the most by the Italian makers. In the Etruscan region goldsmiths developed such processes as alloying and engraving, also the granulation method got perfected and became a signature. In the later Middle Ages, the most sought-after jewelry pieces came from Vicenza and Florence. During the Renaissance era, the art of jewelry making was as important as painting and architecture. Later, in the Baroque era, jewelry design shifted from bold and straightforward pieces to intricate and more detailed. Today Italian jewelry style and look depends on a certain maker. However, “made in Italy” jewelry always relates to luxurious lifestyle, timeless design, and exquisite manufacturing. Italian Chains In Italy chain production started somewhere back to the ancient times, as braided chains were found in Ur and Uppsala at the archaeological sites. They were crafted by using knitting technique and were precursors of the modern link chains. Thanks to Italian makers, we have Figaro, Anchor and Spiga links today. Those links could be a result of reinvented and reimagined Catholic rosaries...
