THIS IS A SPECTACULAR AND RARE ANTIQUE 750 CARAT SMOKY TOPAZ AND LARGE CARVED JADE BEAD PENDANT NECKLACE FROM THE ESTATE OF HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS MARY LOU DAVES WITH AN ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY MONUMENTAL EMERALD CUT 750 CARAT SMOKY QUARTZ. THE SMOKY TOPAZ HAS INCREDIBLE COLOR AND CLARITY AND IS A MAGNIFICENT GEM. THE GEM IS 62MM (2.5 INCHES) LONG, 47MM WIDE AND 39MM DEEP. THE GEM IS SET IN GILT STERLING SILVER AND HANGS FROM A MAGNIFICENT CHAIN OF LARGE CARVED NATURAL JADE BEADS. THE JADE BEADS ARE 1 1/8 INCHES (28MM) IN DIAMETER. THE JADE CARVING IS DEEP AND VERY FINE. THE CLASP IS STERLING SILVER WITH A GOLD WASH. THE NECKLACE IS ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC AND EXTRAORDINARY PIECES WE HAVE SEEN. IT IS A STATEMENT NECKLACE OF GREAT IMPACT, STYLE AND DESIGN.
This is an absolutely exquisite monumental 750 carat smoky topaz and natural carved Jade Necklace from the estate of Hollywood Legend Mary Lou Daves. Ms. Daves' jewelry exemplified her exquisite taste. Her jewels were unique, dramatic and elegant.
Provenance: The necklace is from the Bel Air estate of Delmer and Mary Lou Daves where a who's who of Hollywood legends (Cole Porter entertained guests at the piano) were entertained. Their love story began on the set of the 1938 film, "Professor Beware." As a successful contract writer for Warner Bros., Delmer Daves wrote the screenplay and wanted to visit the set to see how things were going. 19-year-old, Mary Lawrence was cast as the Bride. He was instantly smitten. "So you're playing the bride? I wish you would marry me," he quipped. "I shall answer you with the same spirit you asked me. Of course I will be yours forever." The two were married for 39 years, had three children and a lifetime of adventures.
His career spanned 40 years during which he wrote and/or directed 80 movies including:
Love Affair (1939), Destination Tokyo (1943) , Hollywood Canteen (1944), Dark Passage (1947), Broken Arrow (1950), Birds of Paradise (1951), The Last Wagon (1956), An Affair to Remember (1957), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), Cowboy (1958), A Summer Place (1959), The Hanging Tree (1959)
He was a genius, renaissance man, student and tinkerer.
She had an enduring acting career in film and television and became an author in her later years rallying her famous friends to share their thoughts on famous art works in, "Lovers: 100 Works of Art Celebrating Romantic Love..." She was a lover of art, family, beauty, traveling, entertaining, fashion and many causes.
The necklace is 23 inches long.
The emerald cut smoky topaz is 752 Carats. It is 2 1/2 inches long and is 1 7/8 inches wide and is 1 3/8 inches deep.
The round jade beads are 28mm in diameter.
The necklace has considerable jade content as well as the smoky topaz which is quite heavy.
The clasp is marked 925 for sterling silver. It has a gold wash.
