About the Item

This rare Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet Pendant depicts a seated Cat. The faience cat, crafted between 700-300 BC, is a miniature masterpiece. In ancient Egyptian art, cats were depicted with both domestic and divine significance, appearing in social and religious scenes. They were associated with deities like Bastet, the goddess of protection, fertility, and joy. Cats were also linked to the sun god Ra, who, in his cat form, protected the deceased from the serpent god Apep. Symbolism: Cats symbolized protection, fertility, and joy. The cat amulet is created from fine green-blue Faience. In archaeology, faience is used to describe a non-clay based ceramic, often with a blue-green glaze. The pendant bale is hand hammered 14 Karat Gold. The over 2000 year old exquisite Cat Amulet is a testament to ancient Egyptian artistry. It is of extraordinary design with intricate details and wonderful quality. It is so special to find jewels from the Egyptian period and this cat example is in extraordinary condition with a fabulous depiction of the revered cat. The beautiful green blue patina of the finely rendered cat is just gorgeous. As you explore the intricate details, consider the cultural context in which this amulet thrived—where symbolism and spirituality were interwoven into daily life. With provenance from the Secret Eyes Gallery in New York during the 1970s-1980s, this amulet offers a tangible connection to both the ancient past and a more recent era of art appreciation. Acquiring this piece means owning a tangible link to the rich tapestry of Egyptian history and the vibrant art scene of 20th-century New York. The amulet pendant is 30mm tall including the bale. Without the bale the cat is 27mm tall and is 22mm wide and 10mm wide. The 14 Karat Gold bale is a later addition. The listing is only for the pendant. The chain is only shown for display. The pendant weighs 2.3 grams. Provenance: Ex Secret Eyes Gallery New York 1970's-1980's
