About the Item

The powerful image of the facing head of a Gorgon with tongue protruding is the centerpiece of this 18K gold pendant designed by Steven Battelle. In ancient Greece, the Gorgon, particularly Medusa, was a fearsome beast whose gaze turned men to stone. However, the Gorgon also held a potent protective quality. Its image was believed to ward off evil spirits and enemies, and act as a charm for safe travels and prosperity. This authentic 4th century BC "hemidrachm" silver coin was minted in the city of Parion in ancient Myzia. Parion lay on the coast of what is now western Turkey, at the junction of the Hellespont and Sea of Marmara and was an important port city and customs point controlling traffic between Aegean and Black Sea routes. The coin is set in an ancient-inspired "spiral wire with jawan" design hand crafted by a master goldsmith. This pendant comes with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The 18K handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 18”, 20”, and 24” lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. Be Protected!
