About the Item

An authentic silver "denarius" coin minted during the Roman Republic 79 BC depicts the roman goddess of agriculture: Ceres, in a biga (a chariot hitched to 2 animals) being pulled by 2 serpents. This coin was commissioned by the Roman senator Volteius, who was a strong supporter of agrarian reforms aimed to redistribute land among the common people. The biga of snakes is a symbol of fertility and abundance, also of healing and regeneration, and it is possible that Volteius used this image to represent his hope for a return to prosperity for Rome. This rare and unique coin is set in a Steven Battelle designed twist wire 18K gold setting. This pendant comes with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The 18K handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 18”, 20”, and 24” lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant.
