About the Item
An antique late 19th century garnet necklace set with a 14 karat gold worked clasp. The necklace consists of three strands strung with faceted garnet stones. The gold repousse clasp is round shaped and set with a garnet. Below this round repousse clasp a floral organic frame is hung and adorned with a small garnet and lovely seed pearls set in floral motifs.
This beautiful necklace is made by hand in late 19th century, during the Art Nouveau period between 1890-1914. organic naturalistic designs were very popular. The garnet beads are faceted and nicely strung on the treads.
The thread is not knotted between the beads, knots in between the beads was not always common in the Netherlands. In the 19th century this type of jewelry was very popular and widely used in the regional dress in the Netherlands. Like cannetille in jewelry, garnet gemstones were also quite popular at that time.
The necklace is in good condition. Hallmarks present and visible on the clasp.
