About the Item
This beautiful antique 18kt gold Mourning locket is really a very special and sentimental piece.
Rich aged 18kt gold with a raised repousse cross applied to the front in inky black enamel, black being a commonly used colour on Mourning jewels and directly representing death.
Internally the locket features the original, regal, hand painted portrait of a young gentleman, the second side encloses a lock of auburn hair tied with a gold thread.
Mourning jewels were a beautiful and poignant way of immortalising loved ones lost, keeping them close and holding them dear.
This locket is no exception and is a must have for any collector of antique jewellery whether you are an avid collector of Mourning jewellery or just finding your first pieces at the start of your collecting journey, pieces with a history and a story of love remain poignant for years to come.
It has a large Integral bale ready to hang from your favourite chain or necklace.
Marks and era:
Victorian era, c1870s, unmarked, tests as 18ct gold.
Condition:
Good used condition overall with signs of age and use, there is a mark to the reverse with some small scratches and dings, you to push it shut firmly so it stays closed and doesn't spring open but it does hold closed if closed firmly, some marks around the cross.
