About the Item

An exceptional late 18th-century Iberian pendant, crafted in Cordoba, Spain. This jewel is not only beautiful but also a true piece of history. The pendant is set with 34 table-cut Colombian emeralds, arranged in a body of chased, filigree, articulated, and granulated 18 karat yellow gold. The upper section is decorated with a stylized floral motif, while the lower part features a rosette arrangement of emeralds, a classic Iberian design. The combination of rich yellow gold and vivid emeralds is one of the most recognized color pairings in 17th- and 18th-century Spanish jewelry. From the 16th century onwards, Spain’s overseas trade networks provided an abundance of precious materials: gold and emeralds from Colombia, coral and pearls from the Americas, silver from Mexico and Bolivia, rubies from Southeast Asia, and other gemstones from Brazil and India. By the 17th century, Colombian emeralds were especially prized, becoming a hallmark of the finest Spanish jewels. The reverse of the pendant is stamped with the lion hallmark, a regional mark of Cordoba, Spain. A gemological laboratory report confirming the natural emeralds is included with the images, and a detailed technical report of the Dutch gemology institute is available upon request.
