About the Item
An antique 19th century gold cannetille pendant set with an oval-shaped faceted garnet stone. The cannetille work is delicately made by hand. In the Netherlands they also call these rosettes 'spiders', there is the spiders body in the center surrounded by its 'legs'. In 19th century these types of jewelry were very popular and were widely used in the regional dress in the Netherlands. Like cannetille work, garnet gemstones were also very popular at that time.
Cannetille work involves the use of thin wires of metal, usually gold, which is coiled into various shapes like rosettes, beehives, pyramids, and scrolls, sometimes welded onto thin plates. The name - which is French - comes from the art of embroidery in which silver and gold thread with a spiral twist to it was used.
The pendant is in good condition, small dents and solder spots are visible on the back. Despite these small irregularities, the pendant is still very beautiful and perfect to wear on a chain. The gold has not been polished.
Size 2.9 centimeters in length and 2.4 centimeters wide. The pendant weighs 5.55 grams. Marked on the back of the pendant.
