About the Item
This is an antique 14 karat yellow gold pendant created with five natural red coral bead stones. The gold is made of fine filigree and cannetille work. The cannetille work on this pendant is beautiful, it typically features fine gold wires or thinly hammered sheets. Jewelry with cannetille was very popular in the 1900's, particularly in the 1820's and 1830's. Motifs included tendrils, scrolls, coils, beehives and spider-like rosette ornaments, as shown by this pendant. The coral beads below the brooch swing freely.
This pendant was part of an ornate clasp - worn by women in the 19th century and used as a clasp for a five-strand coral beaded necklaces. These types of jewelry represent a varied and rich historical Dutch cultural heritage. It was part of the regional costume. The wealthier the family the more lavish the gold and coral were.
The pendant is in good condition. Hallmarks are illegible, tested as 14 karat gold.
