An exquisite example of 19th-century Italian artistry, this antique micromosaic pendant and brooch combination is masterfully handcrafted in 14 karat gold. It exemplifies the fine craftsmanship of the Grand Tour period, when travelers collected micromosaic jewelry as souvenirs of Rome’s ancient heritage.
The central medallion depicts a classical putto scene, intricately composed of minute tesserae in black, white, and gray enamel, framed by a decorative geometric micromosaic border. The design is further embellished with gold beadwork and delicate granulation, while three articulated drops add movement and refinement to the piece.
The reverse features a glass-covered locket compartment, originally intended to hold a keepsake such as a portrait, lock of hair, or miniature relic, a hallmark of sentimental Victorian jewelry. A sturdy hinged pin and bail allow the jewel to be worn both as a pendant or brooch, a versatility prized in the mid-19th century.
This remarkable jewel originates from Rome or Venice, renowned centers of micromosaic production during the 1850s, when depictions of mythological and classical subjects were highly fashionable among Grand Tour travelers.
