About the Item
A late Victorian / early Edwardian diamond, amethyst, pearl, yellow gold and silver pendant or brooch, comprising two rhombus shaped amethysts, forty-three old cut diamonds, and one pearl, in 15 karat yellow gold and silver.
This late Victorian / early Edwardian pendant or brooch is set with a large, rhombus shaped amethyst, which is an elegant pale lilac hue. The amethyst is held within a gold claw setting, the design of which is mirrored in the smaller amethyst dropper, suspended from the bottom of the piece. A beautiful, scrolling, openwork design envelops the largest amethyst, adorned with sparkling old cut diamonds, set in shining silver. The diamonds are bright, white, sparkly, and well-matched with one another. A shimmering pearl drops from the central sparkling diamond, finishing the piece off most gracefully. Verso, the piece is fitted with a pair of pendant hooks, allowing it to be worn with a chain, along with a brooch fitting complete with safety catch. The pendant / brooch is backed in yellow gold. The piece is inscribed with “N.E.N.” and “H.X.”, perhaps the initials of a married couple. The pendant or brooch is in great condition, the brooch fitting may be a later replacement. There is a clear inclusion to the right side of the largest amethyst. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
