An antique, pearl, garnet, blue enamel, and yellow gold necklace, formed as a snake, comprising four round pearls, two cabochon garnets, and cobalt blue enamel, set in 18 karat yellow gold, with 18 karat yellow gold chain and clasp.
This striking necklace hails from the early Victorian era (circa 1850) when snake and serpent jewellery was particularly popular. Snakes have long been symbols of fertility, rebirth, and transformation, and are a powerful symbol. This snake has been expertly crafted in yellow gold, with beautiful details applied to the head of the snake. In the open areas, cobalt blue enamel has been applied, which is the most exquisite, luxurious colour, synonymous with the Victorian era. The head of the snake is set with 3 graduating pearls, which are pale and lustrous. The eyes of the snake are a pair of garnet cabochons, which appear to glow. The snake is holding a heart-shaped locket in its mouth, which has been decorated to match with cobalt blue enamel and a pearl. The back of the locket sports a glass panel, which can be eased out, so as to fill the locket with whatever your heart desires, be it a photograph, the traditional lock of hair, or a small keepsake. The graduated chain is crafted of flexible links, which resemble snakeskin, and is fastened securely with a box clasp to the side of the snake’s head. The necklace is in good condition, with a small amount of wear to the enamel near to the clasp. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The head of the snake measures 24mm long, and 12.5mm wide. The total length of the motif including the heart locket is 32.5mm.
