This exceptional pocket watch key is a fine example of 19th-century horological artistry and the luxurious accessories that accompanied the gentleman’s watch. Beautifully executed in 18 karat rose gold, the piece is richly embellished with black and white enamel decoration in a floral motif, creating a striking contrast against the warm gold. The enameling is delicately hand-painted, showcasing scrolling leaves and blossoms on all sides of the key’s oval body.
What sets this piece apart is its ingenious design incorporating two hidden compartments, discreetly integrated into the form. These small yet practical spaces would have served either for protective watch-related functions or as secret holders for miniature keepsakes — a testament to the multifunctional and symbolic character of fine watch accessories of the era.
At one end, the original steel winding stem is preserved, while at the opposite end, a suspension loop allows the key to be worn as a pendant or attached to a watch chain or chatelaine.
