About the Item

An antique French Victorian cross pendant created with natural coral cabochon bead stones. This lovely antique cross is beautifully decorated with seven red coral cabochons across the front. Of which one coral button set to the bail. The natural coral cabochon stones are round shaped and set throughout the cross. This beautiful handmade cross pendant dates from the Victorian era, circa 1870. The earliest finds of red coral date back to 3000 BC. The Romans believed it had the power to ward off evil and danger, as well as heal snake and scorpion bites and cure some diseases. Coral is the color of blood, the life force that protects against disease. It was very popular in jewelry from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century across Europe. The Victorians had a deep love for coral jewelry and dressed their children in it for protection. You will also find baby rattles and bite objects made of coral. Most of the coral came from the Naples region of Italy and the Italians were the master craftsmen and sculptors. The pendant is in very good condition and of high quality. The cross measures 4.5 centimeters in length and 2.2 centimeters wide, including bail. The pendant weighs 4.07 grams. The bail has the French eagle hallmark indicating a minimum fineness of 18 karat gold, est. 1838. The pendant comes without the chain. The pendant will be gift-wrapped in a black and gold jewelry box.
